Lesson Summary

This is an audio lesson — please listen to the audio above (28 mins 36 secs) before completing the lesson quiz.

This lesson distinguishes between “resistance”—the energy-intensive effort to withstand difficulty without breaking—and “genuine resilience,” which is the capacity to be disrupted, feel the impact, and adapt. Drawing on the framework of Post-Traumatic Growth, the lesson outlines five domains where individuals can experience positive change following economic hardship: improved relationships, new possibilities, personal strength, philosophical deepening, and a greater appreciation for life.

Students are introduced to the critical difference between adaptive coping (approaching reality, such as opening mail) and avoidant coping (moving away from distress, which increases long-term vulnerability). By applying concepts from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), the session teaches that while the pain of financial uncertainty is often unavoidable, the suffering caused by resisting that reality is optional.
