Lesson 3 moves from understanding to action by applying Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) specifically to financial worry. It breaks down the “anxiety loop”—the cycle where a financial trigger leads to catastrophic automatic thoughts, which in turn drive avoidant or compulsive behaviors that provide only temporary relief.
Students are taught to use a Thought Record to scientifically test their fears against evidence and develop more balanced, realistic perspectives. The session also identifies common cognitive distortions, such as “fortune telling” and “emotional reasoning,” and introduces the “Worry Window”—a technique for containing chronic stress within a designated daily time slot. By engaging in structured behavioral experiments, participants learn that facing financial reality is safer and less taxing on their energy than constant avoidance.
Thought record template:
- Situation: What happened? (facts only)
- Automatic thought: What thought arrived immediately?
- Emotion: What feeling followed? Rate it 1–10
- Evidence: For and against the automatic thought
- Balanced thought: A more accurate, complete assessment
Six financial cognitive distortions to watch for:
- Catastrophising
- All-or-nothing thinking
- Mind reading
- Fortune telling
- Emotional reasoning
- Personalisation
Three-question quick restructuring:
- Is this a fact or a fear?
- What am I leaving out?
- What would I say to a friend?
Daily practice summary:
- Morning: 2-minute cognitive check before financial content
- During day: pause, breathe, fact-or-fear question at triggers
- Evening: 15–20 minute worry window with thought record
