Overview
The “Making Space for Uncertainty” protocol is a self-guided audio practice designed to help individuals gradually build tolerance for discomfort when faced with uncertainty. Rather than attempting to eliminate uncertainty or resolve it immediately, the practice encourages listeners to gently acknowledge their sensations and thoughts, allowing them to coexist with a sense of “maybe” by softening around the discomfort.
This educational tool is not a substitute for professional medical care or therapy, and users are encouraged to stop if they become overwhelmed. The protocol emphasizes that effective change in anxiety management stems from gradual, repeated practice, aiming to weaken the urgency of worry cycles and increase confidence in remaining present without relying on immediate reassurance or control.

What You Will Practice
- Contacting sensations and thoughts: Gently noticing the physical sensations and thoughts that arise when you encounter uncertainty.
- Softening around discomfort: Instead of trying to immediately resolve or escape the discomfort of not knowing, you will practice softening your body and mind around it.
- Coexisting with “maybe”: Learning to stay present with the feeling of uncertainty for a few moments at a time, rather than demanding immediate reassurance or certainty.
- Building capacity through gradual practice: Developing the ability to remain present and breathe even when you do not have total certainty, strengthening your confidence over time.
When to Use This Session
- When you notice your mind demand immediate answers, reassurance, or control regarding a situation where that certainty is not currently available.
- When you are experiencing a mild-to-moderate sense of “not knowing” and wish to practice softening around that discomfort rather than immediately trying to escape through checking, over-preparing, or seeking reassurance.
- When you find yourself stuck in a loop of planning, predicting, or worrying, and want to gently return to the present moment to build your capacity to tolerate “maybe”.
Instructor Note: To practice this meditation, choose a mild to moderate uncertainty to ensure the experience remains manageable rather than overwhelming. If you feel emotionally flooded during the exercise, pause the audio to focus on steady breathing or grounding techniques to stabilize your nervous system.
