Neuroscience of Trauma

SESSION 1 OF 8

Duration 16mins 08secs

In this session, Dr Jennifer Sweeton investigates the neuroscience of trauma. She outlines five key brain areas that are altered by traumatic experiences, these are; the amygdala, the insula, the hippocampus, the cingulate and the pre-frontal cortex. Dr Sweeton examines each of these area’s functions and their contribution to PTSD. She discusses how clients tend to find an explanation of what is happening in their brain helpful, as it normalises their experiences and gives hope for brain change that is possible after trauma.

This session is part of the Wisemind.com Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, EMDR Therapy Skills Series.

Responses

  1. HI Nicolette – totally agree, but may I say, as a film-maker and therapist, it’s a budget thing. Filming a talking head is far more affordable than cutting away to diagrams and well crafted visuals. The difference in price would be thousands of dollars. It would have to reflect on the subscription price if they were offering that video quality. I think she spoke clearly and that the way she broke up the brain and pointed to the parts, made it easy to remember. Get your point though 🙂

  2. Great breakdown (snapshot) of the brain functions from intensive clinical trauma training I took with Dr. Sweeton. Also a great training where I learned a lot and gained my interest in further pursuing this EMDR training to be able to implement in my practice. Love studying the 🧠

  3. Very interesting session. I agree with comment below that a picture of the different parts of the brain and what they are responsible for would be helpful. I also found that a few words kept on cutting out. Not sure if it’s the presentation or my computer.

  4. Good afternoon Jennifer, I am excited to be trained in EMDR. I do prefer to attend training in person, as the exercises done within the group solidifies what has been learned.
I hope to enjoy this training.

The Loss of Self in Trauma

In this session, Dr Jennifer Sweeton investigates the loss of self in trauma, as it relates to the insula. Dr Sweeton explains how the “interoception center” of the brain becomes dysregulated after trauma, making it difficult to us to connect with ourselves and our bodies. She outlines the various symptoms associated with an underactive insula,...

How Neural Networks Work

In this session, Dr Jennifer Sweeton investigates how neural networks work. Dr Sweeton reviews the main components of neural networks and discusses why working with traumatic networks is critical to recovery from trauma. Dr Sweeton explains the differences between adaptive neural networks and trauma networks. We discover how and why trauma memories become stuck in...

Trauma and Avoidance

In this session, Dr Jennifer Sweeton investigates trauma and avoidance. Dr Sweeton discusses the strong allure of avoiding internal and external reminders of traumatic experiences. While logical, this avoidance can intensify and worsen PTSD symptoms. Dr Sweeton outlines ways we can take small steps toward non-avoidance. She highlights how these steps can create significant changes...

Adaptive Information Processing Model

In this session, Dr Jennifer Sweeton introduces the Adaptive Information Processing Model, the model from which EMDR was developed. Dr Sweeton discusses the hopefulness inherent in this model, and how PTSD can keep us “stuck” in maladaptive information processing patterns.

How EMDR Heals the Brain

In this session, Dr Sweeton investigates how EMDR restores healthy brain functioning, helping clients reduce arousal and reactivity symptoms, reconsolidate memories, regain a sense of self, build dual awareness, and alter frozen, maladaptive neural networks.

Overview of the Eight Phases of EMDR

In this session, Dr Sweeton provides us with an overview of the original eight phases of EMDR, summarising the objectives of each phase. Dr Sweeton explains how there are a lot of variants and different ways to do EMDR depending on a client’s condition and age, though She chooses to focus on the original eight...
