Embodied DBT Training
with Dr Eboni Webb
SESSION 3 OF 19
Duration 14mins 56secs
In this session, Dr. Eboni Webb explores the embodied mind and how it integrates the fragmented parts of a person’s mind affected by trauma. She explains how trauma can lead to structural dissociation, which fragments a person’s sense of self and memories. Clients may experience their minds as divided into two main states: the survivor mind (focused on safety, survival, and logic) and the vulnerable mind (where trauma-related emotions and sensations are housed). Each state has its benefits and drawbacks, but healing requires balancing both into a unified, embodied mind. This involves integrating survival strategies with emotional processing, allowing clients to feel and process their trauma while also recognising the wisdom of their survival mechanisms.
Dr Webb discusses ways to help clients move from fragmented states into an embodied state, and help them transition from merely surviving to truly thriving by embracing both the past and the present.
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb introduces herself and her work as a DBT therapist and Sensorimotor Psychotherapist. Dr Webb introduces the Embodied DBT series, outlining what will be covered in the upcoming sessions. This series integrates DBT and sensorimotor psychotherapy providing skills and strategies to address traumatised clients.
In this session, Dr. Eboni Webb, investigates identifying key trauma intersections that impact healing in embodied DBT. Dr Webb. Discusses how trauma intersects with multiple aspects of a person's identity, including culture, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality, age, and family dynamics. These intersections influence how individuals experience trauma, access healing resources, and organize their recovery...

Dr Webb emphasizes the need to shift from seeing clients as broken or difficult to viewing their behaviors as survival mechanisms developed due to trauma. Early relational wounds, such...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investigates the biphasic arousal model from the therapeutic lens of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and neurobiology. Dr. Webb explains that biphasic arousal involves oscillating between hyperarousal (high stimulation and excitability) and hypoarousal (diminished response and disengagement). This response is different from bipolar disorder, as it is reactive to trauma cues rather...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investigates how to unpair emotions from key survival defences through somatic self-care skills. Trauma often causes emotions to leave the window of tolerance, leading to heightened emotional responses that can manifest as survival defences. Dr Webb discusses how we can help clients regain emotional literacy, understand their bodily sensations,...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investigates treatment planning within embodied Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), guided by an authoritative therapy framework that mirrors the principles of authoritative parenting: high structure, clear boundaries, high expectations, and strong nurturance. In therapy, this means creating a structured and safe environment where clients feel both supported and challenged to...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investigates somatic mindfulness as a key component of Embodied DBT. Traditional mindfulness techniques can sometimes overwhelm clients who have experienced trauma, triggering responses like hyperarousal or the "freeze defense." Dr. Webb introduces somatic mindfulness, which integrates movement, breath, and body awareness to gently reintroduce clients to their bodies after...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investigates the importance of creating a safe therapeutic environment, specifically for trauma healing, emphasizing the concept of "felt safety." Felt safety goes beyond mere intellectual understanding; it involves engaging the body’s sensory system to help clients feel secure. Dr Webb discusses several factors that contribute to felt safety, both...
In this session, Dr. Eboni Webb investigates the importance of regulating safety plans in working with clients exhibiting life-threatening behaviors, high suicidality, or histories of self-harm. She emphasises that while safety plans don't guarantee complete protection, they set a foundation of commitment to avoid harm, both for oneself and others. In embodied DBT, safety planning...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investigates the impact of trauma on the brain and body, particularly focusing on the neurobiological effects of trauma. Dr Webb discusses the role of cortisol in dysregulating the brain, especially during...

Dr Webb discusses how trauma can trap clients in the past, where their experiences of trauma continue to shape their present and...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investitures daily routines to heal the body from trauma. She focuses on practical tools for daily trauma healing, emphasizing the importance of caring for the body as part of the recovery process. Dr Webb highlights the role of resourcing, which refers to building internal and external resources to heal...
In this session, Dr. Eboni Webb discusses authoritative therapy within the framework of embodied Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), exploring how therapists can aid in healing attachment wounds and trauma. She explains how healthy boundaries have three components: containment, screening, and protection. These elements ensure that clients can experience safety in the therapeutic space and model...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investigates how to harness your observing mind to build present moment awareness. She outlines the concept of the observing mind, which allows individuals to process traumatic experiences without reliving them. Dr. Webb credits Janina Fisher's work on dissociative identity disorder for the inspiration behind the observing mind concept, which...
In this session, Dr. Eboni Webb explores neuroception, the body’s ability to sense safety, danger, and life threats. She emphasizes that trauma can severely disrupt neuroception, leaving individuals unable to accurately sense danger, thus increasing vulnerability to re-traumatisation. Dr Webb covers real-life examples to illustrate how trauma can impair neuroceptive abilities. She discusses practical activities...
In this session, Dr Eboni Webb investigates structural dissociation and its impact on trauma. Dr Webb explains how structural dissociation occurs when trauma fragments a person's experiences and personality into distinct parts and how structural dissociation often develops as a defence mechanism in individuals who experienced trauma, especially in childhood.
