Understand Your Client’s Depression: How Life Changes and Stressors Can Lead to Depression

In this session, Dr. Nina Josefowitz builds on the foundation of the four-factor CBT model introduced in the previous session, guiding us through the beginning stages of Behavioral Activation—specifically, the assessment phase. Dr. Josefowitz helps her client Julia,  explore significant life changes and how these have impacted her daily activities and well-being. Using the “Understand Your Depression” worksheet, they examine how certain events have contributed to reduced engagement in previously enjoyable and meaningful activities. Dr. Josefowitz gently helps Julia begin to identify small, realistic re-engagement goals and frames the exploration in a non-judgmental, validating way, emphasising that even if attempts to re-engage are unsuccessful, they are still meaningful steps toward recovery. This session highlights how CBT’s behavioral activation process can help clients move from disengagement to action, and begin to counteract the depressive spiral.
