Evidence Against Your Client’s Negative Thinking

SESSION 2 OF 3

Duration 12mins 33secs

In this session, Dr Nina Josefowitz focuses on guiding clients to identify and explore evidence that challenges their negative, depression-fuelled thoughts. Building on previous steps—identifying key thoughts, introducing the concept of thought habits, and examining evidence supporting negative thoughts—we shift toward helping clients find and expand on evidence against these thoughts.

Dr Josefowitz explores key techniques including; asking open-ended questions to encourage exploration, avoiding direct instruction to foster client autonomy, and expanding on evidence to make it more detailed and emotionally resonant. By doing so, clients begin to challenge cognitive distortions and adopt a more balanced perspective. Dr Josefowitz emphasises the importance of documenting evidence and assigns homework to reinforce this practice.
